Available Internships
Archives Library Information Center (ALIC) – Physical site is College Park, MD

Assist in the development of a variety of reference materials relating to the New Deal Era

The intern will assist the library staff in developing a new web site as well as related educational brochures announcing our newly accessible online collection of Historical Records Survey materials and other Depression-era publications. The web site will relate published library materials on the New Deal era to the primary records in NARA's archival holdings, recently relocated to National Archives at College Park in College Park, on the subject of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Administration and the New Deal period. The holdings include extensive records on the New Deal's Works Project Administration (WPA). These NARA records relate to New Deal activities of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Beltsville, Maryland, and records of the New Deal-era planned community of Greenbelt, Maryland. Both Beltsville and Greenbelt are Washington suburbs only minutes away from the National Archives at College Park.

Special Requirements  –  We are looking for an intern with creative ideas, a firm grounding in the history of the United States during the Depression Era, the ability to communicate both orally and in writing, and an ability, or at least an interest, in developing web-based reference materials.

Assist in the identification, selection, and organization of Internet resources in order to facilitate their access through the ALIC online library catalog.

The intern will enhance the ALIC online library catalog through the addition of metadata: information to make the searchable catalog more useful to archivists and researchers by links to full-text versions; to biographical materials, to Record Group descriptions. Work with the Systems Librarian to edit data in the library's Cuadra STAR catalog through a careful analysis of the online catalog to locate non-standard entries.

Special Requirements  –  We are looking for an intern with education and/or experience in library cataloging and/or indexing, as well as an interest in web-based information.

Archives I Reference & Processing Sections (RD-DC)
Spring/Fall Internship

The aim of the Archives I Reference and Processing Sections is to provide interns a well rounded archival experience. First and foremost, interns are given the opportunity to work with primary documents. Second, interns usually work primarily with one archivist, who serves as a contact for questions and assignments.

The office is broken down into three sections: Reference, Processing, and Forms. However, prospective interns will work mainly in the reference and/or processing sections. The reference section is then broken down into three subject areas: military; navy and maritime records; and civilian agencies. An effort is made to match up an intern's interest with the types of records, but is not a guarantee.

For the 2012 spring semester, we have three projects for prospective interns:
Navy / Maritime Team: Assisting staff with office webpage featuring log book, which entails populating the database of Light House Logs; assisting staff with on- and off-site reference requests.

Processing Team: Assisting staff with reboxing Court of Appeals briefs (which are unarranged) and creating a finding aid. There may be other smaller processing projects including description, reboxing, etc.

Army Team: Assisting staff with arranging and describing unorganized records and/or reboxing records of the Quartermaster General; assisting staff with on- and off-site reference requests.

U.S. citizenship is required and selected interns must submit to a full background check. Generally, internships at the National Archives are unpaid positions with the minimum requirement of 160 hours. For the summer, it is preferred that an intern maintain a full-time schedule for at least 8-10 weeks, as it provides an intern with the best archival experience allowing him/her to take on more challenging projects. However, not being able to work within these parameters will not exclude an intern applicant from being considered.

To apply, please submit the following:
Resume and cover letter
Recent school transcript
Letter of recommendation from a faculty member

For more information, please contact Juliette Arai (202-357-5182 or juliette.arai@nara.gov) or Brenda Kepley (202-357-5330 or brenda.kepley@nara.gov).

The processing work would create, in electronic form, a variety of finding aids, such as box and folder lists, brief descriptions of the records contained in the collections and develop specialized lists of the materials.
