Assistant Curator Historian:

The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) is a museum, research center, and publisher dedicated to the study and preservation of the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South region.  THNOC is a collection of over 35,000 library items, more than two miles of documents and manuscripts, and over 350,000 photographs, prints, drawings, paintings, and other artifacts.  The Collection is currently accepting resumes for the position of Assistant Curator Historian. 

 

The Assistant Curator Historian assists with the development of creative and engaging exhibitions by providing suggestions and advice in the design, text, and items to be used in exhibitions.  This position also provides assistance in the area of acquisitions by researching and evaluating items and providing guidance and justification on potential acquisitions.  The Assistant Curator Historian contributes to outreach efforts by offering ideas and text for articles, papers, and books and communicating to docents and the public facts and details on exhibits and THNOC’s collections. 

 

The ideal candidate must have a master’s degree in history or a related field and a minimum of one year of related experience working in a museum or comparable position.  Qualified candidates must have an exceptional knowledge of New Orleans/Louisiana history and of the holdings of other institutions in the city and state.  Additionally, the successful candidate must have excellent research, communication and public speaking skills, the ability to build relationships internally and externally, and knowledge of conservation techniques and methods.
