Paid Collections Internship - Petersburg, VA


Principal Functions:

The Collections Intern is responsible for assisting with the editing of descriptions for historical documents and the data entry of those descriptions into the Park’s collections database. The incumbent also helps the Park’s Collections Specialist with document cataloging, labeling, and processing of archival materials in accordance with approved operating procedures. The Collections Intern will work a minimum of 30 hours per week for an estimated 12-week period. The intern maintains secondary duties as assigned by the Associate Director and Collections Specialist.


  • Assist in the documentation, care, and conservation of all Park collections in accordance with Park standards and policies.
  • Document, catalog, and prepare archival materials for display or storage in accordance with Park standards and policies.
  • Assist with information entry into the Collections database ensuring the completeness and accuracy of the information therein.
  • Assist with the proper curatorial storage of historic documents.
  • Assist in the management of the Park’s archives in accordance with approved operating procedures.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use word processing and data base management computer software.
  • Maintain proficiency in using word processing and spreadsheet computer software applications.
  • Maintain effective oral and written communications skills using Standard English grammar and writing styles.
  •  Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Possess the ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, holidays, and in critical situations as required.
  • Maintain cordial, cooperative, and professional work relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Maintain a professional appearance consistent with Park standards.
  •  Maintain the ability to support multiple tasks simultaneously without close supervision.
  • Assist other departments and participate in special events as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The successful applicant will be either an undergraduate rising senior or graduate student in the field of history, public history, museum studies, or archival management; or a student that has completed their undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the above fields within the past calendar year.
  • A familiarity with the Civil War era, particularly military aspects, is preferred. 
  • The successful applicant will have strong computer skills and demonstrate the ability to work with complex databases. Experience with Past Perfect software is desirable.
  • Previous experience editing document descriptions or finding aids is preferred. 
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, holidays, and in critical situations as required. 

An Important Note

  • The Park will provide housing at the Wood House and pay the Collection Intern’s portion of utilities during their stay. The Park will also provide a stipend of $240 per week.
  • The Park will certify the intern’s work with his/her educational institution if the intern is eligible for academic credit.
