Preparator/Exhibit Specialist

Reporting to the Curatorial Director, the Exhibit Specialist is responsible for design, installation and maintenance of all in-house exhibits throughout the museum including changing exhibitions, permanent installations, and other projects as assigned. The Exhibit Specialist works closely with the curators, collections manager, and other staff on conceptual planning, design, scheduling and implementation of all in-house exhibit development.

Specific Duties:
Design and fabricate innovative gallery exhibitions highlighting historic objects from Old Sturbridge Village’s collection; Design, fabricate, paint, and install all necessary components for assigned projects: exhibit cases, barriers, panels, pedestals, mounts, partitions, etc.; Assist curatorial and collections staff in the planning of exhibitions to estimate time, labor, materials, etc.; Install exhibition related graphics or didactics, or arranges for contract installation as appropriate; Work with staff to implement gallery lighting as required; Prepare works of art for travel, including building crates when necessary; Accompanies collections staff for pickup and delivery of artwork; Work with the curatorial staff to improve the quality of design, project installations and professional standards; Inspect and maintain exhibits, including dusting and cleaning of artwork, paint touch-up, etc.; Assist with care and conservation of objects as necessary


Qualifications:
Two to five years of collections/exhibits experience in a museum, gallery, or arts organization is required; Bachelor’s degree in art, design or related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience; Experience with exhibit design, preparation and installation, art handling and crating, carpentry, fabrication, and painting; Demonstrated experience with advanced carpentry techniques and with woodworking machinery and tools; Familiar with museum standards for handling and installing works of art and professional collections practices, policies and procedures; Familiar with standard safety procedures; Must be organized as well as flexible, and able to be self-directed in prioritizing tasks and work; Excellent interpersonal skills and team work required
