About the Sitka Historical Society & Museum

The Sitka Historical Society is a 59 year old organization which operates the Sitka History Museum.  The Society’s mission is to preserve and promote the events, stories and artifacts of the human history of the Sitka area for the inspiration, education and benefit of the Public and future generations.  The Sitka History Museum has amassed one of the most diverse and largest collections in Sitka comprised of over 8,000 three-dimensional artifacts, several hundred paintings, prints and examples of fine art, a spectacular collection of nearly 25,000 historic photographs, and more than 100,000 archival documents, all ranging from the 1740s until the present day.  During the summer of 2015, the Museum began an eighteen month project to relocate, inventory, and digitally catalog its objects and archives in preparation for the opening of its new museum in 2017. 

 

Job Functions

This fellowship will offer hands-on, practical experience with both museum administration and collections management/registration.  The fellow will work with the Executive Director on various administrative tasks during assigned times two hours per day, five days per week.  The remaining time, the fellow will focus on collections management.  The fellow may also have the opportunity to contribute to event planning, fund raising, curation, and short publications depending on past experience.  Job duties may include, but are not limited to:

·         Assisting with the packing and physical movement of the collections

·         Conducting a systematic inventory of the collections

·         Creating catalog entries in the collections database (PastPerfect)

·         Researching collections and acquisition records

·         Photographing and documenting collections

·         Labeling and housing/rehousing objects for long-term storage

·         Completing administrative duties, as assigned

·         Performing additional tasks consistent with the employee’s background and training

 

Qualifications

·         Recent graduate of a BA or MA program in museum studies or related field 

·         Experience handling museum objects, artifacts, and/or archival material required 

·         Experience with museum collections software experience required, PastPerfect preferred 

·         A knowledge of and interest in American history

·         Standard office computer skills including Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, database software and word processing

·         Experience with digital camera equipment and scanners

·         Ability to work independently on detailed tasks

·         Valid Driver’s License

·         Must be able to lift 50 pounds and work in tight spaces

 

Schedule

The term of the fellowship position is one year beginning in May 2016.  The fellow will work 40 hours per week.  Flexibility may be required to coincide work days with the Executive Director’s and the Curator’s schedule.  Occasional evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.

 

Compensation

The fellow will be provided a $600.00 monthly stipend, plus housing at the historic U.S. Forest Service’s Geodetic Survey House.  A $500.00 travel defrayal stipend will be paid to the fellow upon arrival in Sitka.  The fellow will be entitled to 80 hours of paid time off, in addition to receiving the same holidays as museum staff.  This may include: Labor Day, Alaska Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, President’s Day, and Seward’s Day (The fellow may ask to have some of those holidays moved to accommodate his/her religious beliefs).  Most importantly, the fellow will receive a significant experiential work opportunity in the fields of museum administration and collections management while enjoying some of the best scenery Alaska has to offer.
