The Brinton Association of America, Inc. (BAA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, staffing, operating, and maintaining the Brinton 1704 House and Historic Site.  The BAA’s mission includes presenting the Brinton 1704 House and Historic Site, its contents, and associated property for the education of the public and students with a focus on Quakerism and 18th-century early colonial architecture, art, archaeology, flora, artifacts, equipment, tools and related historical objects and customs.

General Job Description:

The BAA is seeking a Weekend Volunteer Coordinator to oversee the operations of the Brinton 1704 House and its accompanying 13-acre historic site during weekend hours in the open season (May through October, 1-5 pm). The Weekend Volunteer Coordinator reports to the Museum Administrator and is responsible for the overall management of the small historic house and its volunteers during open hours, including weekend operations and maintenance, on-going interpretation, volunteer outreach and scheduling, and assistance with genealogical research.                                      

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Site Management

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Brinton 1704 House on the weekends.
  • Ensure that the Brinton 1704 House is open to the public for tours during all open hours: Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00 pm, May through October.
  • Ensure preservation of the historic house, collections, and grounds through routine cleaning and maintenance of the house museum and office.
  • Maintain guest book, gift shop, and resources for visitors such as the genealogy room library. 


  • Work with Museum Administrator to recruit, train, and coordinate the schedules and activities of house guides, interns, and other volunteers.
  • Submit a report summarizing activities for the year to the Museum Administrator.
  • Respond to and/or refer mail, email and phone communications to appropriate officer or individual.
  • Record and maintain income from admissions, sales, and donations.
  • Record visitation and conduct “exit interviews.”


  •  Work with Museum Administrator to prepare for and participate in special weekend events.
  • Conduct historical research related to tours and exhibits.
  • Instruct visitors in use of genealogical research.
  • Provide tours for drop-in visitors during open hours on weekends.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience


·      A working knowledge of US history and a desire for learning local history.

·      A passion for preserving and presenting history to the public.

·      Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.

·      Ability to motivate volunteers and interns through teamwork, and to relate to diverse constituencies.  

·      Social and leadership skills to engage visitors and recruit volunteers.

·      Can organize and prioritize responsibilities with attention to detail & deadlines.

·      Physically able to navigate stairs.                       


·      Undergraduate or graduate courses in History, Archaeology, Museum Studies, Education, or other related fields.

·  Experience with the maintenance and handling of historic artifacts as well as a natural property site.


Position is for 8 hours/week, specifically 4 hours every Saturday and Sunday (unless arranged ahead of time with the Museum Administrator). Salary begins at $10/hour.
