Museum Interpreter; Historic Houses, Atlanta History Center, Atlanta GA


The Atlanta History Center is looking for a highly motivated and results oriented professional to fill the role within the organization of Museum Interpreter.

Individual will work with historic content, to present historical information to guests using a variety of techniques, including but not limited to museum theatre performances (1st and 3rd person), guided tours, and crafting demonstrations. In addition, individual will assist in day-to-day operations of interpretation team, including but not limited to, administrative tasks, training, animal/livestock care, and collections care and cleaning.



  • Ability to master and apply a wide variety of interpretive techniques. Ex. theatrical performances, storytelling, and first person narrative.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of the historic periods and culture being portrayed and/or conveyed to visitors.
  • Be flexible and adjust to changes in schedule and assignments
  • Communicate and interact with visitors of all ages about events, people, and cultures of various time periods
  • Work collaboratively with Atlanta History Center Staff and key departments to understand the institutional objectives and mission.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of the Historic Houses including the history, interpretative themes, collections, historic landscape, and preservation of assigned site(s). 
  • Present factual and engaging historic interpretation to a variety of audiences.
  • Assist in educational programs such as school tours, and public programs.
  • Regularly review material in content manuals and participate in continuing education classes as required.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of approved tour techniques and new programs. Adapt to evolving interpretative strategies or formats.
  • Develop demonstration skills, which may vary based on Historic House.
  • Assist in the daily operations of the Historic Houses including clerical duties and minor collections care and cleaning of the historic houses as trained and assigned.
  • Assist with daily care and interpretation of living collections, including small ruminants, poultry, and gardens.  
  • Assist in the development of new interpretative content, strategies, programs, or tactile demonstrations.
  • Assist other departments and work special and private events as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.




  • Bachelor's degree in History, Education, or Theatre preferred; course work in African American Studies a plus.
  • Formal or informal experience working in museums, historic homes, teaching gardens, or other educational setting a plus.
  • Customer service and public speaking skills required.
  • Effective verbal communication skills required.
  • Ability to perform tasks that require moderate physical exertion as required (lifting, climbing, bending, pulling, standing for long periods).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must have working phone, internet/email access, and reliable transportation.
