Education and Curatorial Program Coordinator

The Thomas Cole National Historic site is now seeking an Education and Curatorial Program Coordinator. This is a two-year, full-time position, with the potential to be extended. They will be a key member of the museum staff and will work across departments in Exhibitions, Collections, and Education to realize meaningful offerings on-site, interpretive and educational initiatives, and to sustain and build good relationships with schools, and youth audiences. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in education, art, and museum programming, and be comfortable multi-tasking while maintaining attention to detail and quality. The position requires strong problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills. This is a full time, Monday through Friday position. In addition, special projects/events may take place on weekends. Reports to the Director of Exhibitions + Collections, and to the Manager of Visitor Engagement.


Responsibilities include working in the following two areas. Priorities of projects/responsibilities shift throughout the year depending upon exhibition schedules, and tour operation seasons.


Work with Director of Exhibitions and Collections to:

·         Assist with the planning and implementation of exhibitions (across the site and those that are traveling.) This includes helping to coordinate loans, interpretive labels, catalogues, and installation.

·         Implement updated collection maintenance plan and storage needs to meet the recommendations for collection care as outlined in the 2020 DHPSNY Preservation Survey.

·         With collection director, Identify key collection objects in need of conservation and/or stabilization for future display. Prepare collection objects for approved conservation and/or display on-site.

·         Help coordinate logistics around the travel of our collection objects leaving the site for traveling exhibitions

·         Research and help create content for an online Collection page that highlights Cole Site collection objects, and brainstorm and help develop a possible publication featuring the collections that could be available for purchase.

·         Coordinate professional work around the excavation of the Main House attic. Oversee the collection, conservation, and research of the uncovered artifacts.


Work with Manager of Visitor Engagement to:

·         Engage area schools with Thomas Cole, our site, and our new online offerings

·         Serve as trained educator and provide support within touring operations

·         Teach lesson plans/activities to students, both during on-site visits and by making trips to school classrooms.

·         Lead special group tours around the Site that consist primarily of children or students.


Possible other duties include making updates to the website, assisting with social media and email blasts, and drafting grant narrative reports. The ideal candidate will be flexible and willing to shift projects as demands and priorities of the institution change, depending on the season and time of year.
